NDA & CDS Defence Entrance Exams 2026: Written Test & SSB Interview Roadmap

Preparation guide for UPSC NDA and CDS examinations, Mathematics & GAT strategies, 5-Day SSB Interview process, and Officer medical standards.

Gateway to Commissioned Officers in Indian Armed Forces

The National Defence Academy (NDA) for 12th-pass candidates and Combined Defence Services (CDS) for graduates are prestigious examinations conducted by UPSC twice a year to select officers for the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force.

Stage 1: Written Examination Blueprint

1. NDA Written Exam Structure

  • Mathematics Paper: 120 Questions (300 Marks) in 2.5 hours. Focus on Class 11 & 12 Algebra, Trigonometry, Matrices, Differential Calculus, Integral Calculus, and Probability.
  • General Ability Test (GAT): 150 Questions (600 Marks) in 2.5 hours. Divided into English (200 Marks) and General Knowledge (400 Marks covering Physics, Chemistry, General Science, History, Geography, and Current Events).

2. CDS Written Exam Structure

For IMA, INA, and AFA entries: 3 papers — English (100 Marks), General Knowledge (100 Marks), and Elementary Mathematics (100 Marks). For OTA (Officer Training Academy) entry, the Mathematics paper is exempted.

Stage 2: The 5-Day SSB Interview Experience

Candidates qualifying the written test receive a call-up letter for the Service Selection Board (SSB) interview, which evaluates Officers' Like Qualities (OLQs):

  • Day 1 (Screening Test): Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) test and Picture Perception & Discussion Test (PPDT). Stage 1 rejection occurs on Day 1.
  • Day 2 (Psychological Testing): Thematic Apperception Test (TAT), Word Association Test (WAT), Situation Reaction Test (SRT), and Self-Description Test (SD).
  • Day 3 & 4 (Group Testing Officer - GTO Tasks): Group Discussion, Group Obstacle Race (Snake Race), Progressive Group Task (PGT), Half Group Task (HGT), Lecturette, and Individual Obstacles.
  • Day 5 (Conference Day): Panel interaction and announcement of recommended candidates for medical examination.

Physical Fitness Standards for Defence Officers

Start physical conditioning early. Practice running 2.4 km in 15 minutes, 8-10 push-ups, 4 chin-ups, and rope climbing to ensure peak physical readiness for SSB testing.
